Just got my first email from Todd at Fields Data Recovery. They first estimated around $300-$600 by phone to recover data (mostly digital photos) from 250GB external HDD. The email today says $1400-$1800 but that they're still in progress on the recovery and will give me a specific amount along with which specific data files they can save in a few hours. I smelled a rat and googled "Data Recovery fraud". This site popped up. My plan is to just ask them to return my drive, but I've got a bad feeling about this. I certainly will not send them money. That's about 7 years of travel and family pictures down the drain. I'm very bummed! I should have done my homework up front on these sorts of services! "Live and learn...die and forget it all" as my late mother-in-law so prophetically stated.

DO NOT USE FIELDS!!! This company is a SCAM. Back in August I sent in my drive that was accidently reformatted. I was told that 95% of this type of recovery would cost $199. I don't know why I didn't come across this site prior to deciding to use Fields. I did research them, but the worse thing I came across was slow service. I was put at ease by the the Customer Service Rep who was very professional and courteous. I was assured of their guaranty of no cost if they can't retrieve any data. Well, I sent my drive in, and was promptly sent an email (Within 3 days of sending my drive in) with a list of recoverable files on my hard drive (About 80 gigs worth). The only problem was, they wanted about $1000 to do the recovery. After being lulled into a false state of comfort, and negotiating the recovery cost down to $600, I agreed to have them perform the task. I was told I should get my data back in about a week. Once they got my money, everything changed. A week turned into two, then three, then four. After about a month of calling, I finally got a USB drive back with what looked like it had all of my data on it. Even though it took a while, I didn't care. I was just glad to get my missing data. Well, that’s what I thought until I tried to open some files on that drive. It took several weeks to get through my files, but onb the entire disc, the only file I could open was one, (Yes, only one) file, which by the way was just a saved internet shortcut. Every other file on that drive was corrupt. I called them back and they were very apologetic, and told me to send back the drive, and they would redo the recovery. I sent it back, and again was assured that I would get my data back within a week. That week went by, then another one, and many more. Two months and a hundred phone calls and emails later. I finally got the drive back. Guess what, no useable data again. I called and wanted and asked for a refund. The CS rep said he didn't have the authority to do that, and he would have to have someone from the home office in London call me. It's been over two weeks, and of course no call. Anyway, the last conversation I had when I called back the Customer Service Rep, I stated their guaranty, and was told that actually I did get all my data back, and just because it was all corrupt and non-useable, they did what they promised. AGAIN, DO NOT USE FIELDS DATA RECOVERY!!!

My experiences are much the same as everyone else's. In hindsight I can look back and say that I was desperate, which led me to be more trusting than I would normally be. I have now been 7 weeks without the company server, having initially sent the hard drives and back up from our Dell Server. "Almost there", "Nearly done" - the same lies others have heard. Finally to be told that the data couldn't be recovered. Stupidly I agreed to send the server itself, as this would potentially lead to the data being recovered. The last three weeks have been spend waiting for the server to be couriered back to me. Clearly never going to happen I have now realised. I have reported the 'theft' of my server to the police, as their failure to return it when requested falls under the term 'theft' in the Theft Act. Tomorrow I am driving to Wales (through the snow) from London to puck up the server and my hard disks (or whatever remains of them), despite having delivered them to 100 Pall Mall. When I get it back I will be hounding the policy to prosecute and my solitors will also be taking action.

I delivered personally my external drive full of very precious pictures to Rapid Data Recovery's address shown on their webpage after consulting in e-mail and phone about the details of the recovery process and the expected range of cost. I tried to receive an update for few weeks via e-mail then I started to use the phone. I called them every 2 days when I finally got a response that my drive got lost in transit and they are happy to send me a new drive same capacity. Obvioulsy I got very upset and asked them to look for the drive cause it is unacceptable that they say it got lost in transit (they informed me that it was not tracked). 2 days later I was informed that they actually found my drive and they will give me an update by the end of the week. Then further more phone calls later I managed to talk to my 'Account manager' who informed me that there are some sort of very complicated problems with the drive for which they need to send it to their partner recovery firm which charges a £195 non-refundable fee and an additional £195 if any data is recovered, which they would waive £100 because of they kept me waiting so long and scared that they lost my drive. I didn't got through with this version given that I wasn't even sure that they really found my drive and altogether I just wanted to get my drive back from them. I requested that and was promised that it will be sent by recorded UPS delivery next day. From that they on I called them every single workday, sometimes several times a day. I was either told that it has been posted but they don't know the tracking number or that it hasn't been posted but will be next day. When 4 days ago I was told that they have sent it by Royal Mail non-tracked delivery, so I should just wait, I will get it in a few days. 2 days ago I was told again the same but they couldn't tell me when was it sent... And FINALLY I received the drive back today. I am yet to check that it is my rive even in the inside not only in the outside and seriously I HOPE they haven't even opened it. This is the WORST experience I ever had with any company in my life. My advice to everyone who still have a drive with them to bug them on the phone as much as possible, I believe this is what worked in my case.

At first I sent my hard drive to Rapid Data Recovery. I was advised on first contact with this company that my hard disk had a relatively minor fault in that the firmware was corrupt and that probably it would cost me the advertised cost of £97 to repair. I sent the disk the same day for repair. I received an email on the 17th August stating that they had done some work but it was unsuccessful and that the whole disk would have to be forensically scanned and that only their sister company Fields Data Recovery had the facilities to do this. It would cost me £195 + vat if I wished to proceed. And that the process would take 2-4 days. I paid this via credit card. I have since then not received the disk back. Attempts at communication have been unsucessful, email, phone or website. I have since scanned the internet (wish I had done this first) and found that many people have suffered the same fate. This company is most likely scamming the public. They probably do not do anything at all. They also do not return disks, which is even more frustrating than the money scam. All email correspondence and web evidence is available on request, It is much more important that I get my disk back. And wonder if this is a criminal act to retain disks (theft). Fields Data Recovery and Rapid Data Recovery are one in the same and these data recovery con artists will not hesitate to scam you out of your money.

I contacted Fields Data Recovery [UK] when my drive failed [on a nine year old mac G4] - during backup I’d missed one very important item, all my email records [in the Outlook Express 5 ‘Identities’ folder]. So, I sent the drive to them. FDR successfully remounted my disc in a new drive [£195.00 + VAT], then completely failed to extract a reasonable amount of data from it [another £195.00 + VAT]. They found only 19% of what was on there - whereas I was able to simply fit the drive in a caddy from PC world, plug it into my mac and there was 100%! My story ended well because I got all my data back - but ONLY because I received the drive back from FDR. Many don’t - and I suspect that this was a cock up on their part as it then allowed me to irrefutably demonstrate, by getting ALL the data back myself, how pathetic THEIR attempts had been! Search for ‘Fields Data Recovery’ and ‘complaint’ and you will find plenty more damning material out there - and don’t even think of using them!

I too have had many woes with this poor excuse for a data recovery company. I sent in my hard drive on July 22nd 2009, and all communication was decent until I got the price. They advertise $199 on google, and then when they actually recieve your hard drive (as they did with mine) they seem to quote you a ludicrous price of $1800!!! Bait and switch tactics if ever. Anyways, I was desperate for my data and told them to start the data recovery process, and paid them a partial down payment. Lo and behold, after 3 weeks of trying contact Fields Data Recovery with emails and phone calls, and getting no response from anyone competent, I am starting to believe that they just took my money. I have requested for MY PROPERTY to be back in my hands, and have gotten the same run around every single time. This company is a scam, data recovery + fields data recovery = scam should be the equation that everyone thinks. I have also filed BBB complaints, but this company seems to operate in the UK and has no real offices in the United States, as the office that I sent my hard drive to in New York seems to be just a forwarding service. I was never aware of this, and I feel I have been misled and ultimately scammed out of my money. Whats even worse is that I do not know where my hard drive is and fear that they will destroy my hard drive if I dont keep quiete about this situation, and I will not have a chance to go with a more reputable company. Learn from my mistake and never EVER under any circumstances leave your hard drive with Fields Data Recovery, that is if you value the data that is on the hard drive.

A few months ago I accidently formatted my laptops hard drive which contained some important data but it also had 2 years worth of photos from my travels. I used FIELDS DATA RECOVERY, their branch based in the UK. I sent them my drive and they did a raw scan on it. They said the recovery was '100% successful' and that the only thing they could not recover was the actual file names and folder structure, otherwise everything was fine. I made sure I asked them to look for specific documents before making payment and also asked about the attributes of the photos so that I would be able to sort the recovered data. I then paid them £450. On receiving the recovered data I found that they had not recovered the documents I had specifically asked about. All the photos they had recovered had their dates re-set to the recovery date and the size of the files were all incorrect. Most word docs etc would not even open. Basically what they sent me was useless. How do you find 4000 travel pictures in amongst 44 000 with no attributes to base your search on. Even when I did visually recognise a picture its file size was 450MB and was taking up that space on the drive!! This whole experience has resulted in me losing days of my time, made them £450 richer, and caused me endless hassle and stress trying to resolve the problem with them. I have called them, written letters and sought legal advice in an attempt to get a refund. Unfortunately, short of taking them to small claims court (which I have investigated but would involve more time, energy and money), there is nothing more I can do. The consider the matter closed and no longer respond to written letters. I just hope people read this review and save themselves the same loss of time and money. I have eventually used software I bought off the internet and done it myself, which is surprisingly simple and I managed to recover about 90% of my data.

I have sent them the owner of my companies hard drive to recover some personal and work data. They were eager to answer my emails and voice messages, until they got the hard drive and payment. Now for over a month, no returns of any communication. Fields Group appears to be a real company in the UK, but the US offices I am finding out are just hollow shells with phones answered by floor receptionists that can’t do anything for you. What’s worse is we mailed the Drive. I can’t even drive someplace to get it. When I was searching for a solution we looked at Fields Data Recovery (quote about $700) and Drive Savers (quote about $2500). I tell you what, if I know now that Fields was just a bunch of Thieves working out of empty shared offices, I would have spent the $2500. Beware! Do not use Fields Data Recovery!!!! Find a real company like Drive Savers. They might charge a LOT more but at least they exist and are not crooks.
