I had an 80 GB hard drive go bad last month. It has been six months since I backed up general data, one month since I backed up movies and photos (unfortunately I did 1000 photos last month), i actually had my school work on iDisk.
The apple store said we can't fixit go to micro center maybe they can
Microcenter said we cant fix it -that'll be $70 - try these places...
One was local and told me the repair would be around $800 and storage device would be extra.
The other ESS Data recovery said it would be between $100 and $1300 but probably about $600. On the phone and on the web site I was told the average repair was $600. This and they give you a 60 GB external HD (or larger for the difference in price). I figured - Hey, I can save a couple hundred bucks!
So it arrived and within a day they told me it had a medium level problem with moderate damage -$1175 plus tax.
I asked them about the earlier estimate and their stated average cost (considering it sounds like I had an avg. prob). The rep told me they would reasses if I wanted them to. Isaid yes - only if there is a strong chance the estimate will be near the 770 figure - otherwise don't waste time.
She said they would try. A week later, after I hear nothing, I emailed her. Almost immediately I got an email from a different rep saying. They looked at it and it is still $1175. Do I want to make payments?
I said send it back. I will go to the local company. Even if they charge me close to $1000 I won't feel like I am being swindled.
ESS data recovery services did not honor statements they made verbally or on the website. To add insult to injury, they are charging me double what it cost me to send it there to return it.
